Project
Winkworth Arboretum – New Visitor Centre and Car Park
Our appointment covered Project Management, Employer’s Agent, Contract Administration and Quantity Surveying Services, guiding the project from procurement through to completion. Working under a JCT Design & Build 2016 contract initially, and later transitioning to traditional procurement following a contractor insolvency, we acted as the client’s trusted commercial and contractual adviser throughout a complex delivery journey.

Set within the nationally significant landscape of Winkworth Arboretum, this £8.5m project was commissioned by the National Trust to deliver a new visitor centre, reconfigured car park and associated external works. With rising visitor numbers and future growth projections, the Trust required infrastructure that would enhance the visitor experience while protecting the arboretum’s unique character and ecological value. The overarching objective was clear: to create a sustainable, welcoming destination that would serve future generations while integrating seamlessly into its sensitive natural setting.
Despite significant challenges, including a prolonged suspension of works and necessary temporary protection measures, the project was successfully recovered and was completed within the revised funding and governance framework. Through careful cost control, phased procurement, supply‑chain engagement and transparent reporting, we enabled the client to make informed decisions, balancing time, cost and quality. Our leadership ensured that a complex situation was transformed into a controlled and deliverable outcome.
